Keeping Out Ants and Other Crawlies

One of the biggest dilemmas can be keeping the feeding station free from ants and other ground-crawling insects.

In general, ants and most insects do not swim so we use a deterrent utilizing a double-bowl system.

You will need:
A food bowl to place your bait food in
A second bowl that is larger than the food bowl

Your bait food
Water

  1. 1. Place your bait food in the smaller bowl.
  2. 2. Pour at least two inches of water in the largest bowl.
  3. 3. Place the smaller food bowl inside the larger bowl with the water.
  4. Make sure the sides of the smaller bowl do not touch the larger bowl.

We have successfully used this system many times and have kept the bait food ant free. We did have had one ingenious species of ant that created a bridge with their bodies, but this has happened only once. The average ant does not swim and cannot reach the food.
